Pearson is back at it again! These guys love keeping course content fresher than a pair of Adidas Futurecraft 4Ds; new for September 2018 is the Pearson Level 5 HND in Sport and Exercise Science.
Sport and Exercise Science HND
The sports industry makes a significant contribution to the UK’s economy, with some reports estimating the sports sector provides £23.8 billion in earnings and 987,564 jobs to the UK. Pearson has been working with specialists in the industry to find out where there is a skill shortage in a bid to continue the growth of the sector. Students of the brand-new Sport and Exercise Higher National Diploma will graduate with the knowledge necessary to work in a number of exciting professional roles such as Advanced Coach, Sports Performance Assistant and Exercise Referral Instructor.
As with each Pearson HND, the course has been created to help students learn and develop the practices and interpersonal skills needed to find success in their chosen profession. The new Sport and Exercise Science HND will be regularly assessed for relevance and updated to reflect the changing needs of business in the sport and recreation industry.
The course has been developed with collaboration from partners such as Reading Football Club, Loughborough University and The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity. Graduates of the Sport and Exercise Science HND have the choice to go directly into the workforce or to join a level 6, top-up degree course at a university or higher education provider in the UK.
The first year of the two-year course (Higher National Certificate) will begin by grounding students’ knowledge in the core elements of sport and exercise science. During the first year, students will decide which of the possible specialist pathways they wish to follow – coaching science; or exercise, health and lifestyle. For those looking to keep their options open, there is a non-specialist general pathway.
The first-year of study will cover topics such as nutrition, sports psychology, and anatomy and physiology. Depending on the course provider, students may also have the possibility to choose modules such as biomechanics, injury prevention and sports massage.
The second year of the course (Higher National Diploma) will focus on refining students’ skills in the two aforementioned pathways in preparation for future professional success. Units included in the level 5 programme include advanced nutrition, advanced coaching and an independent research project where students can shape their work around future career development.
While topic-specific knowledge is essential for employment in a chosen industry, Pearson has acknowledged the need for transferable skills to ensure their graduates can perform their roles from day one. Each HND graduate is challenged to develop critical thinking skills, effective communication, self-management and sector-relevant research skills. Likewise, each HND course is created alongside HE partners to ensure graduates are well prepared for the challenges they are likely to face if they choose to study for a level 6 top-up degree.
